  1. Sphynx is a towering monolith in the year , maybe even snagging the coveted top spot. That said, the album is not without it's faults, however few and far between they are. The ambient interlude, The Arrival Ritual, is good, but it hardly progresses at all throughout the whole six minutes it plays.
  2. Like its predecessor, Sphynx is jammed with authentic Middle Eastern themes, i.e., the "ritual breathing" and percussion during instrumental "The Arrival Ritual" and the layered, Egyptian-flavored melodies of epic thrasher "Incendium Between Mirage and Time" and album-closing march "Caravans to Ur."9/

  6. One of the best intelligent black metal albums ever Sphynx CD music very catchy and original band, this album shows them at their best, though this may be disputed by puritan black metal fans who prefer melecheshs debut As Jerusalem Burns Al Intitsar for its sheer blackness or by the people who may prefer the sophomore Djinn album for its extra emphasis on Middle eastern scales.
  7. Mar 24,  · The album presents the band's Mesopotamian/Sumerian metal in a more aggressive and intricate manner. The CD version includes an enhanced multimedia section featuring a trip to the world of Melechesh (lyrical overviews, wallpaper, photos, glossary of terms, and a videoclip for the track "Genies, Sorcerers and Mesopotamian Nights").
